Women in the film industry
On cinematography.com there was a thread about why there were so few women in the film/tv/movie industry (working behind the camera, not in front). It was a three page long thread. I read all three pages. There was one guy who was a total jerk. Maybe I just took what he said to offense because I am a woman planning to go into this industry. He said things like it was in our(womens) nature to be weaker than men, to not like computers and technology, to not like bossing people around, and to like going shopping and being housewives more than going out into the world and achieving our dreams. What a retarded fool this man seems to be. He even made some comments along the lines of "almost all the women in the industry are lesbians with male traits." Another user, also male, said "If I'd said something like that, I'd be banned." Then other users, all of which were male, were wondering why this guy wasn't getting banned. Finally a moderator came in and suspended him from posting for 30 days. The guy that got suspended was the only one making comments like that. All the others (who happen to be professionals in the film/tv/movie industry) were saying that they would never discriminate against women in the industry and would gladly hire a woman as a grip, camera assistant (both of these being jobs dominated by males because of the having to carry of heavy equipment and cameras), or any other job as long as she and they were sure that she could carry her own weight around the place, do her job right, and not slow anyone down. After reading the three pages of the thread I wanted to reply and name a few posters who I agreed with, tell the guy who got suspended that he's a jerk, and express my opinion...oh, AND be the first and only female to reply to the topic. But, alas, the thread was closed. The mods must have deemed it too provocative and shut it down. I was upset that I couldn't reply. I wanted the two people who I agreed with the most (one of which was the major defender against the guy who was a jerk and got suspended) to know that I agreed with them, and I also wanted someone to know that I was there, ready to express my opinion as the only girl on the topic. So, I sent a message to those two guys telling them this. I did not express my opinions to them mainly because they had both said pretty much everything that I felt was my opinion on the matter as well.
The thread is here http://www.cinematography.com/forum2004/index.php?showtopic=27173 if anyone wants to read it.
